Geothermal exploration in Japan's volcanic regions demands materials that can endure extreme hydrothermal conditions. When drilling deep wells in areas like Hachimantai (Iwate) or Kuju (Oita), downhole cables are subjected to hot water, steam, and corrosive chemicals. Huaneng downhole cables are engineered using a precise combination of advanced polymers and corrosion-resistant metallurgy to guarantee long-term performance.
We utilize Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP) and Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) for core insulation. FEP offers outstanding electrical properties and resistance to thermal degradation up to 200°C. For even more extreme temperatures, PFA (Perfluoroalkoxy) insulation is deployed, sustaining structural stability at continuous working temperatures of up to 260°C. These materials prevent dielectric breakdown, ensuring clean signal transmission from downhole sensors to surface recording units.
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and chloride stress corrosion cracking are primary failure modes for downhole cables in Japan. To combat this, Huaneng offers double-alloy coated steel wires (EHS) and specialized stainless-steel armoring (316L, Incoloy 825). Incoloy 825 provides superior resistance to pitting and stress-corrosion cracking in high-chloride, acidic environments, making it the preferred choice for deep geothermal wells in Japan.
